Chicken Cordon Bleu may sound like a fancy dish, but it’s actually very easy to make at home. It’s made with chicken breasts rolled up with ham and cheese inside, then coated with breadcrumbs and baked until golden and crispy. This recipe is simple, comforting, and perfect for both everyday dinners and special occasions.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 slices of cooked ham
4 slices of Swiss cheese (or any cheese you prefer)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or panko)
Salt and black pepper to taste
Toothpicks (to hold the chicken rolls)
A little oil or melted butter (for brushing)

Optional Creamy Sauce

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon mustard (Dijon or regular)
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Flatten the Chicken
Place each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap or clean kitchen towels.
Gently pound them using a rolling pin or the flat side of a cup until they are about ¼ inch thick.

2. Add the Filling
Lay one slice of ham and one slice of cheese on top of each flattened chicken breast.

3. Roll Them Up
Carefully roll each chicken breast from one end to the other.
Use toothpicks to hold the rolls together so they don’t open while cooking.

4. Set Up the Coating
Prepare three shallow bowls:

  • One with flour

  • One with beaten eggs

  • One with breadcrumbs
Add a little salt and pepper to each bowl for extra flavor.

5. Coat the Chicken Rolls
Dip each chicken roll into the flour first.
Then dip it in the beaten eggs.
Finally, roll it in the breadcrumbs until well coated.

6. Bake the Chicken
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place the chicken rolls on a greased baking tray.
Lightly brush the tops with melted butter or oil.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and golden brown.

7. Make the Optional Sauce
While the chicken bakes, melt butter in a small saucepan.
Add the flour and stir for one minute.
Slowly pour in the milk while stirring until smooth.
Add mustard, salt, and pepper.
Cook for a few minutes until the sauce becomes thick and creamy.

8. Serve
Remove the toothpicks from the chicken.
Serve the chicken rolls whole or sliced.
Pour the creamy sauce on top if you like.
Enjoy with vegetables, rice, or mashed potatoes.
